Farewell: Friendster apocalypse is near
Social network pioneer Friendster, as we know it, will be gone on May 31. The company today announced to members that as part of its conversion from would-be Facebook competitor to "the social gaming destination of choice," it would be keeping accounts alive but deleting all user photos, comments, blog posts, and other profile content. Is Friendster Shutting Down?
Friendster as we know it may be ending, but the site is not going offline. Rather, it is following in the footsteps of Myspace and focusing on becoming a media hub. Friendster CEO Ganesh Kumar Bangah knows that Facebook is currently king of the social graph, and sees no point in banging his head against the blue-and-white wall. This is not Friendster's first concession to Facebook.
Of course, Friendster's name becomes a bit of a misnomer now.
We are introducing a new and improved Friendster site in the coming weeks. As part of this change, we will remove a number of social networking functions in Friendster. This includes your existing account profile, photos, messages, blogs, and shoutouts. However, your list of friends will be preserved, along with your basic profile information.
